MISSISSAUGA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is launching a new campaign, BankruptingOntario.ca, to sound the alarm bell over Ontario’s reckless spending and mounting government debt. On the eve of the Ontario budget – one that is projected to finance yet another deficit through borrowing – the CTF is sending the government a message that they need to take corrective actions now to prevent bigger problems down the road.

“This government is bankrupting Ontario,” said CTF’s Ontario Director, Candice Malcolm. “Many taxpayers have had enough of idly watching this government ignore our economy and destroy our province’s finances.”

“Enough is enough. That is why we are launching this campaign,” continued Malcolm.

Ontario’s net debt has surpassed $272.8 billion dollars, the highest figure of any province in Canadian history, and the bonded debt burden per capita in Ontario is now $20,116.

“Interest payments are now the third largest expense in the budget. And this is a low interest rate climate. When rates go back up, each point will add another $3 billion to our annual interest payment,” continued Malcolm.

The first set of ads went up today in Mississauga. This location was selected because it is both the finance minister’s riding as well as the location of one of the cancelled gas plants.

“Today, we are in Finance Minister Charles Sousa’s riding to send him a message. His job as finance minister is to balance the books, something this government has failed to do year after year,” said Candice Malcolm. “Mr. Sousa needs to do the right thing by addressing out-of-control spending and showing Ontario a balanced budget.”

The CTF demonstrated how Ontario could balance the budget this year in its pre-budget submission earlier this winter.

“We will continue to raise awareness about Ontario’s risky fiscal situation, and continue to raise money for our BankruptingOntario.ca campaign to plaster more billboards across Ontario,” continued Malcolm. “This government needs to wake up to the fact that it is bankrupting Ontario.”

The billboard and bus stop ads can be viewed here.
